Based on a 225 acre site in Keizer Station, Oregon, the project was commissioned by the Museum of Modern

Art, NY for the exhibition “Foreclosed: Re-Housing the American Dream”.
The Foreclosure crisis represents a unique opportunity to rethink the American Dream’s intimate connection

to owning the single family home. The crisis revealed how suburban sprawl’

s devastating effects on the environment also extended to millions of Americans who could no longer afford

their homes. The project asks, ‘what if we could live sustainably AND close to nature?’
Nature-City Ad Campaign by Wieden+Kennedy

Re-inventing the Town-Country for the 21st Century, Nature-City proposes a range of new housing

typologies, to integrate density, diversity, mixed use,and a wide range of affordability with publicly accessible

nature, ecological infrastructure, sky gardens, urban farms and large swaths of natural habitats. With an oak

savanna, wetlands and a Doug Fir forest, Nature-City is five times as dense as neighboring suburbs, but has

three times as much open space. In Nature-City, your house generates power, cleans water, composts food or

grows mushrooms. You can live, work, can food, rock- climb and walk to the movies all in the same day.

You can live in a tower of houses, or on a hilly roof-top by a pond. In Nature-City, your backyard is nature,

and you can afford it.

Based on the realities of the expanding city of Keizer Station, Oregon, the project drew extensively on the

expertise of Gerald Frug,a local government law expert and Brandeis Professor of Law at Harvard, Eric W.

Sanderson, a Senior Conservation Ecologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society,

and others. In response to the challenge of winning the approval of a traditional suburban public, the project

includes a series of TV commercials promoting the benefits of Nature-City,

created by advertising agency Weiden+Kennedy.
